Acupuncture FAQ
What Is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is the strategic placement of ultra-thin needles at specific points on the body to restore the flow of Qi — vital energy — and return the body to balance. It is a complete system of medicine rooted in thousands of years of clinical practice, not a quick fix or a one-time experience.
Does acupuncture hurt?
Acupuncture needles are about the diameter of a human hair — nothing like a medical injection needle. Most patients feel little to nothing. Some notice a brief tingling, warmth, or mild pressure as the needle reaches the correct point. What most people feel most is deeply relaxed.
How will I feel after an acupuncture treatment?
Every body responds differently. Some feel energized, others feel grounded and calm, some feel tired as the body begins to integrate the work. All of these are normal. We recommend protecting your time after a session — eat something light, drink warm tea, and allow your nervous system space to process. This is part of the treatment.
How should I prepare for an acupuncture treatment?
Eat a light meal before your visit. Avoid strenuous exercise at least two hours before and after your session. Wear loose, comfortable clothing. Come ready to slow down.
How long are acupuncture sessions?
Your initial visit is 90 minutes and includes a comprehensive health history intake, vital signs, tongue and pulse examination, and your first treatment. Follow-up sessions are approximately 60 minutes. This is not a rushed experience.
How many treatments will I need?
Acupuncture is not a one-session solution — and anyone who tells you otherwise is not being honest with you. Real, lasting change requires consistency. Most patients begin to notice meaningful shifts between sessions 4 and 6. At Root & Essence we work in structured protocols of 6, 8, or 10 sessions designed to create sustainable results. Patients who commit to a full protocol get outcomes. Patients who drop in occasionally do not. If you are ready to do the work, we are ready to support you.
