Acupuncture FAQ
What Is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is the strategic placement of ultra-thin (think a hair width) needles in acupoints that correspond to patent’s condition. Acupuncture is painless and often relaxing. The goal of acupuncture is to renew the flow of Qi also known as ‘vital energy’ and restore the body to balance.
Does acupuncture hurt?
Since an acupuncture needle is about the diameter of a thick human hair there is no pain. However, some may feel a sensation as the needles go in, and some people feel nothing. You may feel a minor tingling or slight pinch as the needle reaches the correct point under the skin. Sometimes a slight warmth, distention or numbness is experienced, but these sensation are only momentary
How will I feel after an acupuncture treatment?
Acupuncture can be quite subtle yet profound for some. You may feel energized, while others will feel calm and grounded, or even a little more tired. We recommend after a treatment you create a more relaxed and quiet environment to allow your body to integrate the treatment. Eat something light, drink a warm soothing cup of tea, and take it easy.
How should I prepare for an acupuncture treatment?
Please eat something before you come. Acupuncture is not recommended on an empty stomach.
Avoid strenuous exercise (including sex) at least two hours before and after your treatment.
Wear loose and comfortable clothing when possible.
How long are acupuncture sessions?
Initial sessions run for 90 minutes and include an in depth intake of health history and current state of health. Your vital signs will be taken, including examination of tongue and pulse, and finally your treatment. Follow-up sessions will run for approximately an hour reviewing your progress. First 20-30 minutes include a brief intake, vital signs and examination of tongue and pulse and final 30 minutes are your treatment
How many treatments will I need?
This depends on your condition. If there is an acute condition, like straining your back once, then a few treatments are suitable at least once a week. If you find you’re having a more chronic condition such as persistent back pain, you should expect to continue your course of treatment for at least one time weekly for a minimum of one month. To have general maintenance and preventative health getting treatment once a month is ideal.
