THE EASTERN PERSPECTIVE: APPLE
PING GUO - APPLE
In East Asian medicine, also known as Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), food plays a crucial role similar to herbs, with each having specific functions related to meridian systems that correlate with organs. These organ/meridian systems directly influence how our bodies respond to internal and external stressors or triggers. In many cultures, including East Asian culture, food is considered a form of medicine. Hence, everything we consume has a direct impact on our well-being and how our bodies function in response to various stimuli.
Overview of Apple (Ping Guo) Affinities
When examining the properties of the Apple (Ping Guo) in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), we observe its specific affinities with certain organ and meridian systems.
1. Spleen:
The Apple is known to have a gentle nourishing effect on the Spleen in TCM. It is often recommended for individuals who have Spleen deficiencies and weakness, helping to improve digestion and strengthen the Spleen meridian.
2. Stomach:
In TCM, the Apple is considered beneficial for the Stomach meridian. Its sweet and slightly sour taste can help regulate Stomach Qi and promote healthy digestion and diminish bloating.
3. Lung:
The Apple is believed to have a harmonizing effect on the Lung meridian by building immunity . It is commonly used to clear heat and moisten the Lungs, making it a suitable choice for individuals with Lung imbalances, such as asthma, brochitus and mucous congestion.
4. Large Intestine:
Due to its high fiber content, the Apple is often recommended for promoting bowel regularity and supporting the health of the Large Intestine meridian in TCM. Apples help to strengthen intestines, and assists the body in building fluid to prevent constipation, and/or regulate diarrhea
In TCM, the Apple is valued not only for its nutritional benefits but also for its therapeutic properties in supporting various organ systems and meridians. Understanding these affinities can help guide its usage in promoting overall health and well-being.
HYDRATE WITH WHOLE FOOD
When considering hydration, water is typically the go-to choice. However, incorporating whole foods into our hydration routine can offer additional benefits such as minerals, electrolytes, and vitamins. This holistic approach can provide more comprehensive nourishment to support overall well-being.
One fruit in particular that I’ve been craving is apple. Then of course, I realized I may be a bit dehydrated. Apples are composed of about 85% water, which makes them a hydrating snack choice. Additionally, they contain electrolytes like potassium, which help maintain fluid balance in the body. The combination of water and electrolytes in apples can contribute to hydration and overall health.
BENEFITS OF EATING APPLES:
Skin Health:
Eating apples can offer several skin benefits due to their nutrient content. They are rich in antioxidants like vitamin C, which helps promote collagen production, aiding in skin elasticity and reducing wrinkles. Additionally, the polyphenols in apples may help protect the skin from UV damage and contribute to a healthier complexion. The hydration provided by the water content of apples also helps maintain skin moisture and suppleness.
In addition to hydrating and skin-related benefits, apples offer a range of other health advantages:
Nutrient-rich: Apples are packed with vitamins, minerals, and fiber, making them a nutritious choice for overall health.
Heart health: The soluble fiber in apples, particularly pectin, can help lower cholesterol levels and improve heart health.
Digestive health: The fiber content in apples promotes healthy digestion and can help prevent constipation.
Weight management: Apples are low in calories and high in fiber, making them a filling snack that can aid in weight management by promoting satiety.
Blood sugar control: The fiber and polyphenol content in apples can help regulate blood sugar levels and reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes.
Reduced risk of chronic diseases: Regular consumption of apples has been associated with a lower risk of certain chronic diseases, including cancer, due to their antioxidant content.
Hydration: As mentioned earlier, the high water content in apples helps keep the body hydrated, which is essential for overall health and well-being.
Incorporating apples into your diet can contribute to various aspects of your health and support overall well-being.
